Warehouse Unit Heater Maintenance: Keeping Workers Safe and Warm

Warehouse Unit Heater Maintenance: Keeping Workers Safe and Warm

Unit heaters — the suspended gas-fired heaters common in warehouses, loading docks, and garages — are often forgotten until they fail on the coldest day of the year. Regular service keeps them reliable and safe.

Annual Service Checklist

  • Combustion analysis: verify burner efficiency and CO levels
  • Heat exchanger inspection: cracks can allow combustion gases into occupied spaces
  • Gas valve and pressure check
  • Igniter and flame sensor cleaning
  • Limit control and safety relay testing
  • Fan motor lubrication and amp draw
  • Vent pipe inspection for blockage or corrosion

Carbon Monoxide Risk

Cracked heat exchangers are a serious safety hazard. If a unit heater has not been serviced in over two years, or if occupants report headaches or unusual odors, have it inspected immediately.
