The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) regulates the installation, operation, and servicing of gas-fired heating equipment in Ontario. Understanding your obligations as a building owner or operator helps you avoid compliance issues and ensures safe operation.
Who Needs to Be Licensed
Any technician working on gas-fired equipment in Ontario must hold a valid Gas Technician license (G1 or G2) issued by TSSA. G1 is the higher qualification, covering all gas appliances. G2 covers appliances up to 400,000 BTU/hr.
Owner Responsibilities
- Ensure equipment is maintained by licensed technicians
- Keep records of service and inspections
- Respond to TSSA orders or notices of violation
- For pressure vessels (boilers over certain thresholds): ensure proper registration and inspection
Documentation
Always obtain and retain service records from your contractor. In the event of an incident, documented maintenance history is critical.
