Cooling Tower Maintenance and Water Treatment Basics

Cooling Tower Maintenance and Water Treatment Basics

Cooling towers are efficient but require consistent attention to both mechanical condition and water chemistry. Neglect leads to poor heat rejection, equipment damage, and serious public health risk from Legionella.

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Fan blade inspection and balance check
  • Gearbox oil change (gear-drive towers)
  • Fill media inspection for fouling or collapse
  • Drift eliminators and distribution nozzles
  • Basin cleaning and sediment removal
  • Float valve and makeup water connection

Water Treatment

Cooling tower water concentrates minerals, supports biological growth, and corrodes metal components. A proper treatment program includes corrosion inhibitors, scale inhibitors, and biocides.

Legionella Risk Management

Ontario regulations require a written water management plan for cooling towers. This includes quarterly inspections, microbiological testing, and documentation. Failure to comply carries significant liability. Ensure your service contractor is providing and documenting this program.
