With provincial energy incentives and rising natural gas prices, many building owners are evaluating heat pump systems as alternatives to boilers. Here is an honest comparison.
Commercial Boilers
Gas-fired boilers remain the dominant heating source in Ontario commercial buildings. They are proven, well-understood, and serviceable by a large pool of licensed technicians.
- Pros: high output, proven reliability, lower installation cost
- Cons: gas dependency, combustion emissions, efficiency limited by flue temperature
Commercial Heat Pumps
Air-source and ground-source heat pumps transfer heat rather than generating it, achieving COPs of 2-4 at mild temperatures.
- Pros: significant efficiency gains in shoulder seasons, no on-site combustion
- Cons: reduced output below -15C, higher installation cost, requires electrical capacity
The Hybrid Approach
Many Ontario commercial buildings are now using hybrid systems — a heat pump as the primary heat source with a gas boiler as backup for extreme cold. This delivers most of the efficiency gains without the performance penalty.
